The author of the article applies the method of comparative historical analysis to trace the evolution of the Chinese legal tradition formed on the basis of Confucianism and Legalism. Changes in the legal awareness of the Chinese society that took place over recent decades, first and foremost as regards the law as the regulator of social relations, are discussed at length. We consider that the objective character of this change to be caused by the switch to a different type of economic system. Refs 15.
