The First Pirates’ “Trade Union” on Earth

Abstract

At the end of the 4th century BC the Aetolian League – a professional specialized military, pirate and corsair organization – was created on the territory of Aetolia. It was an organization of professionals – warriors, pirates and corsairs – which organized their activity ashore and afloat, concluded contracts on provision of war, pirate and corsair services on their behalf, as well as specified the amount of payment for such services.
