The Faculty of Law of the St. Petersburg Imperial University (1819-1917): studies in the collective biography
Abstract
The aim of this article is to create a collective portrait of the lecturers at the Faculty of Law of Saint- Petersburg State University from 1819 to 1917. The research is based on a wide range of published and archival sources, reference resources devoted to biographies of St. Petersburg University professors. The most accurate estimates of the structure, the strength of the faculty and various data related to the lifes and scientific careers of lectures are given. Thanks to this approach a detailed account of the development of jurisprudence and the history of the community of lawyers at the University was made. The features of the lawyer community life are compared with the university-wide spirit of the development of science and the life of the scientific community. Based on the prosopography analysis hypotheses about the characteristics and the specific situation of lawyers as part of the university corporation were put forward. Refs 24. Tables 4. Figs 2.
